Experience

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. - Horizon Oil Sands Plant
Mechanical Engineering Student -Primary Upgrading Maintenance
May - August 2025

From May 2025 to August 2025 I worked in the Primary Upgrader as a millwright helper at CNRL Horizon Oil Sands Plant. This summer job came about after my year long stint as a Mechanical Engineering Student in Primary Upgrading reliability when CNRL wanted me to come back and get field experience. The upgrader I worked in was a Delayed Coking Unit (DCU). My day to day was kept busy with helping the millwrights to complete the work orders that were assigned. These ranged from pump swaps to preventive maintenance execution on critical equipment such as the cutting system on the delayed Coker itself. This term gave me an appreciation for the field and how difficult it can be if plans given by engineering are not well thought out. It also allowed me to get hands on with critical equipment not only on the Horizon plant but equipment such as pumps that are crucial to all industry's. Overall this experience was incredibly positive and I am grateful for the opportunity given by CNRL.

For the full year of 2024 I worked as a Mechanical Engineering Student in Primary Upgrading Reliability. This was my first taste of working within the field of engineering. During my time at CNRL I worked on many projects all centered around improving the reliability of Primary Upgrading including projects pertaining to the Delayed Coking Unit (DCU) that was the heart of primary upgrading. If you wish to see a more in depth analysis of my projects please see the projects portion of this webpage. Throughout 2024 I learned an incredible amount about running a plant, how maintenance scheduling works, how budgets work in major corporations and so much more. Overall my time as a Reliability Engineering Student at CNRL was an incredibly enjoyable and valuable experience that has set me up for my early carrer.
